AI assistant

PDFBook includes an optional AI assistant that can help you understand what you’re reading. It’s a panel you open from the top bar (or with Ctrl/ + T), and it’s aware of the page currently on screen.

The assistant connects to an AI provider of your choice, so you stay in control of where your data goes and what it costs. Supported providers include:

  • Ollama — run a model locally on your own machine.
  • OpenAI
  • Claude (Anthropic)
  • OpenRouter

Add your provider and model in Settings → AI. If you use a local model with Ollama, nothing leaves your computer.

  • Answer questions about the page or spread you’re viewing.
  • Summarize or explain passages.
  • Help you find your way around a long document.

The assistant is entirely optional and off until you configure a provider. When you use a cloud provider, the text you ask about is sent to that provider under your own account; a local Ollama model keeps everything on your device.
